Car parking information

30 minutes free

In some Derbyshire Dales District Council car parks, we will be offering a 30-minute free parking from 1 April 2025. These car parks are listed below:

To claim your 30 minutes free parking, you are required get a paper ticket from the machine. This is so parking enforcement officers are made aware of when you arrived, helps to avoid confusion and avoidable parking fines.

This offer cannot be used to top up a chargeable parking ticket, as it has been specifically created for short stay customers who will be staying no longer than 30 minutes.

This offer cannot be used to top up the resident’s free concession permit to allow you to park at 2.30pm or arrive at 10.30am.

The 30 minute free parking session will be increased to 1 hour for those who display a valid Blue Badge with the free 30 minute ticket, which you will still need to obtain from the payment machine.

Ashbourne Reborn - Proposed changes to Market Place car park

Part of the Ashbourne Reborn project will see the majority of the Market Place car park pedestrianised and only a small number of short term parking spaces will be retained.

There will be a number of dedicated motorcycle bays, disabled bay/s and standard parking bays, these bays are been proposed to provide short term parking options to customers needing to pick/drop off to the businesses nearby.

The proposals include 30 minute limited waiting for standard parking bays, and hour for disabled and motorcycle parking bays.

The Notice will be erected in the area and will be advertised in the Ashbourne Telegraph and Peak Advertiser week commencing the 4th August 2025.

Any objections to the proposals will be presented to 11th September meeting of the Community & Environment Committee.

Car Park Review 2025

A cross-party Member Working Group have been reviewing the car parking fees which have not changed for over ten years.

The groups recommendations were presented to the Community & Environment Committee on the 27th January 2025 and approved at Council on 30th January 2025.

The fees will commence from the 1st April 2025. These changes will be advertised in the next edition of the Ashbourne Telegraph and Peak Advertiser. A copy of the Notice will be displayed in all Council car parks across the district.

Advert for the changes to car park fees - 1st April 2025

How have the car parks been categorised?

Car parks that are close to the town centre, which include the 30 minutes free parking are our premium car parks. Therefore, prices for these car parks have increased due to their quick and easy access to the town centre.

Car parks on the periphery of the town centre, are keeping the same prices so there is no change for general parking, only coach parking.

Car parks outside of the town centre are underused and therefore, have a reduced fee.

Matlock Bath car parks are always at full capacity in the peak seasons (summer) however, in the off-peak seasons (winter) the capacity is reduced. Therefore, we have decided to create two separate fees. One which will be cheaper in the off-peak seasons and more expensive in the peak seasons.

What is next for the car park review?

We will be reviewing the provision of the following:

  • Disabled parking
  • Motorhome facilities
  • Bicycle provision
  • Free at the point of use car parks

Resident Parking Permit

One free resident permit is still automatically issued to each household during March of each year. Each household only receives one free parking permit, if you would like additional parking permits you can apply for them at a charge of £60 each.

The residents parking permit is valid from 3pm until 11am the following day. Therefore, if you wish to park in a District Council car park between 11am and 3am you must purchase a pay and display parking ticket from one of our machines, or purchase a session online through the PayByPhone app.

In order for the parking permit to be a valid alternative to a parking ticket between 3pm until 11am, you must clearly display your parking permit on the windscreen of your vehicle.

Any replacement residents parking permits will be provided at a charge of £60.

Topping up residents permit

If you wish to extend your stay in one of our car parks, you may buy a parking ticket before 11am and display it alongside your free residents permit to extend your stay to 12 noon. Maximum extension is 1 hour when using it alongside your free residents parking permit and is valid on day of purchase only.

Blue Badge Holders

Parking charges apply to all users of any Derbyshire Dales District Council car park including blue badge holders. However, in recognition that it may take blue badge holders longer to take care of their business, we are offering an extra hour on top of the time they have purchased.

All blue badge holders must make sure to clearly display their blue badge and pay and display ticket in the windscreen of their vehicle, or by paying for a parking session using the PayByPhone text payment service.

Please note: If you choose to pay for a parking session online using our PayByPhone payment service, you must still clearly display your blue badge in the windscreen of your vehicle, in order for parking enforcement officers to provide you with the extra hour of parking.

In regard to the 30 minutes free parking, blue badge holders are provided an extra 30 minutes on top of this time. Therefore, offering 1 hour free parking in all car parks listed at the top of this page.
