Your council tax bill: amounts collected on behalf of other authorities

Derbyshire Dales District Council collects council tax on behalf of several other authorities including Derbyshire County Council, the Police, the Fire Authority and the relevant Town or Parish Council.

Each of these authorities instructs Derbyshire Dales District Council (the billing authority) of the amount that it requires us to collect (their precept) for the coming financial year. While Derbyshire Dales District Council has a legal duty to collect the council tax for these other authorities, we have no control over the amount that they instruct us to collect on their behalf.

The government limits the increases that can be applied to council taxes for most of the authorities whose charges are shown on your council tax bill (this is known as capping). This means, for example, that Derbyshire Dales District Council could not increase its element of the council tax by more than 2.99% for 2025/26. However, the government has chosen not to set limits for town and parish councils.

We input the figures in our system, and this is what ultimately makes up the charges on your council tax demand notice.
