Main works for the Ashbourne Reborn transformation programme started late January 2025 and will continue throughout the year. As the works are due to take place over approximately a 12-month period, delivering the change will be disruptive in the short term and will require traffic management measures including partial and full road closures, temporary traffic lights and diversions. All partners are committed to reducing disruption as much as possible and to working closely with residents and businesses to minimise the impact. Once finished, the town will benefit for many years to come.
UPDATED 28 February - After listening to the concerns of stakeholders we have amended the plan to divert all HGVs over 7.5 tonnes away from the town centre from 10 March. While northbound HGVs will still have to follow the published diversions, southbound HGVs can use Buxton Rd, St John Street and Park Road as usual.
The following information was accurate on 28 February 2025. It will be updated as the programme progresses.
Traffic management and diversions
According to current phasing plans Dig Street (south) will be closed to traffic from late January–June 2025 and Dig Street (north) will be closed to traffic from April-early November 2025. St John Street (A515) will be closed to traffic from 10 March-early September 2025. Access for pedestrians and businesses will be maintained while roads are closed to traffic.
During that time the following diversions will be in place:
Town Centre
- All vehicles travelling south from the A515 can use Buxton Rd, St John Street and Park Road as usual.
- Cars and light vehicles wishing to travel north (A515 St John Street) should follow diversions for 'Town Centre Parking' along Park Road, Cokayne Avenue and The Green Road, as an alternative to Compton, Dig Street and St John Street.
- Hall lane will be one way from South to North (uphill), open for access and buses only. Entry will be from Park Rd/Cockayne Avenue, with no entry from The Green Road.
- Traffic may still access Compton to use local shops and services.
Local Traffic Diversion
- Southbound, all vehicles can travel from the A515 down Buxton Road, St John Street and Park Road as usual.
- Northbound, cars and light vehicles that would usually travel along Compton, Dig Street, St John Street and Buxton Rd (A515 north) should follow the 'Local Traffic diversion' along Park Road, Cokayne Avenue and The Green Road towards Godfreyhole (B5035 then B5036), rejoining the A515 at Fenny Bentley.
- Traffic may still access Compton to use local shops and services.
HGV Restriction and Diversions
- There will be a 7.5 tonne weight restriction northbound in Ashbourne town centre, with no access to HGVs onto the northbound A515. HGVs should follow 'HGV Diverted traffic' signs, using the A52, A523 and A53.
- HGVs travelling southbound from the A515 can use Buxton Rd, St John Street and Park Road as usual.
