Business recycling and food waste collections

From 1 April 2025 all businesses in the UK with over 10 FTE staff, will by law (Simpler Recycling in England), have to segregate their waste into 4 categories, to remain compliant:

Our waste collection services include, general waste (non-recyclable waste), dry mixed recycling and organic waste collections. Meaning we can offer all the waste streams you need to stay compliant with the new legislation changes.

  • General waste - non-recyclable waste
  • Recycling - cardboard and paper
  • Recycling - all other dry recyclable materials
  • Food waste

If your business employs fewer than 10 full time staff, the deadline for implementation will be 31 March 2027, buts it’s a good idea to take the opportunity to comply early – giving you one less thing to worry about. Simpler Recycling in England - Derbyshire Dales District Council

Who will enforce simpler recycling?

If you do not comply with these requirements by 31 March 2025 (or 31 March 2027 for micro firms), you are at risk of receiving a compliance notice from the Environment Agency. Compliance notices can also be issued against anyone who is not separating waste in agreement with their waste collector.

Duty of Care

All businesses are classed as a waste producer, which means you have a duty of care to ensure that waste is managed safely and without harming the environment. A duty of care waste transfer note helps you to demonstrate that you have fulfilled this duty. By providing a clear record of the waste transfer, you must show that you have taken responsibility for your waste and ensured that it is being managed safely and responsibly. Its important that you keep a copy of the waste transfer note for your records, as you may need to provide it to regulatory authorities as proof of your compliance with waste disposal regulations.
